Dr. Matthew Butler is a senior lecturer and researcher within the Caulfield School of Information Technology. His teaching is in the areas of programming, game development, and emergent games and multimedia technologies. He is also course leader for the Bachelor of Information Technology (Games Development) major.
Matt’s research interests lay in the visualisation of information using multimedia technologies. Particular focus is placed on the use of these techniques and technologies to address visualisation challenges in the domain of Emergency Management. Recent projects have also examined the use of large-scale multi-touch surfaces in this and other contexts.
Matt also has a research focus on the use of emergent technologies within education. His PhD thesis, completed in 2010, focused specifically on learning challenges within the context of introductory programming and examined the use of educational theory and technology to address them. Matt received the Faculty of Information Technology 2010 Doctoral Medal for this work.
